Description
This camp is offered only as a two-week session because of the number of hours required for swimming
lessons.
Kanata campers will walk to Beaverbrook Pool each morning for their lesson and then back to camp for the rest of the morning.
Barrhaven campers will travel by school bus to the Walter Baker Pool each morning for their lesson and then back to camp for the rest of the morning.
Campers will have a 45-minute swimming lesson each morning for two weeks (no lessons on Mondays). When they are not at their swim lessons,
"swim campers" will participate in our
Multi-Sport Camp in the morning and additional free swims each afternoon.
Swim Camp is the perfect solution for busy parents. No need to drive your
kids to swim lessons outside of your regular work day. Lessons will be provided
during camp hours by experienced, qualified swim instructors and participants
will work toward completing their levels in the City of Ottawa's Lifesaving Society SWIM program.
Campers will be placed in appropriate swim levels based on the swim assessment completed on the first day. We will be offering a variety
of levels throughout the morning and will ensure that each camper is placed in the appropriate group. Just
as with the City of Ottawa swim program, participants will receive a progress report at the end of each session.
Appropriate Swim Level
Our swim program is run in conjunction with the City of Ottawa and we rely on the expertise of their lifeguards to assess the appropriate
levels of all campers.
Campers will be placed in swim groups of 8 (as follows) based on the swim level provided by parents on their registration form. However,
the lifeguards
reserve the right to move a swimmer to a different level based on their assessment over the first 3 days of lessons. Parents will receive written notice of
their child's swim level on Thursday of the first week.
09:40am - 10:10am (levels 1 and 2) *
10:10am - 10:55am (levels 3 and 4) *
10:55am - 11:40am (levels 5 and 6) *
* Small group sizes allow the instructor (and an assistant) to work very closely with all campers at different levels.
Determing Swim Levels
Please be sure to add
YOUR CHILD'S SWIM LEVEL to their registration according to the descriptions below. This
helps us in ensure a safe swim experience for all campers.
Swimmer 1: These beginners will become comfortable jumping into water with and without a Personal Flotation
Device. They値l learn to open their eyes and exhale underwater, and gain the skills to confidently get objects
off the bottom. They値l work on floats and moving through the water on their front and back.
Swimmer 2: These advanced beginners will jump into deeper water, and learn to be comfortable falling
sideways into the water wearing a Personal Flotation Device. They値l be able to support themselves at the
surface without an aid, learn whip kick, and swim 10-15m on their front and back.
Swimmer 3: These junior swimmers will cannonball, dive and roll into the water. Their new bag of
tricks includes treading water, handstands, in-water somersaults and swimming underwater. They値l work
on front crawl and back crawl over short distances, and endurance swims of 25 to 50m.
Swimmer 4: These intermediate swimmers will refine dives and stride entries. They値l wrestle with
eggbeater kick, and master foot-first surface dives, and in-water back somersaults. They値l learn to
scull and swim lengths of front, back crawl, whip kick, and breaststroke arms with breathing. They値l
cap it all off with endurance swims of 50-100m.
Swimmer 5: These swimmers will master shallow dive entries, eggbeater kicks, and foot-first
sculling. Surface dives will take them down to underwater swims. They値l refine their front crawl,
back crawl, and breaststroke over 50m swims of each. Then they値l pick up the pace in 25m sprints
and endurance swims of 100-200m.
Swimmer 6: These advanced swimmers will rise to the challenge of sophisticated aquatic
skills like compact jump entries, and eggbeater kick for 1 min. while changing directions. They値l
develop strength and power in head-up front crawl or breaststroke over 25m. They値l easily swim 100m
front crawl, back crawl, and breaststroke, and complain about the 4 x 25m sprints in interval training. The
200 to 300m endurance swim will be a piece of cake.
