About the Owner
Owner Matt Barr, is a former elementary school teacher. He
was a Grade 5 teacher at Roland Michener Public School in Kanata. He was also head of the
school's Phys. Ed. Committee and helped coach the school’s varsity teams in soccer,
bordenball, volleyball, and track and field. He also helped to run the lunchtime
junior intramural sports program. Before becoming a school teacher, Matt was a
full-time tennis and squash professional. He is a certified personal trainer,
powerskating and hockey instructor, an Intermediate certified hockey coach, a 3M
Level 3 National Coach and a certified Camp Canoe Instructor. In his free time, Matt loves to participate in sports of all kinds. He plays
competitive squash and enjoys running and playing hockey a couple times a week.
He is married (August 2003) to Neove (Zafiris). Neove is a veterinarian
with Health Canada. They live in Kanata with their four “furry” children, Indigo and Olive (the dogs) and Dax and Sebastien (the cats).
Camp Directors
Daryl "Brumbie" Knight (Barrhaven)
Director, Daryl Knight, is affectionately known to campers as "Brumbie". Brumbie started with Camps Canada as a Senior
Counselor in the summer of 2005 and was quickly recognized for his leadership ability. He was
soon (summer 2006) promoted to the position of Camp Director.Brumbie is currently an Occasional Teacher (primary and junior) with the Ottawa Carleton School Board. He is currently seeking that elusive teaching job with the board full-time. He is a graduate of both Queen's University (Kingston) and Griffith University (Australia).
In his spare time he plays on 2 rugby teams here in Ottawa and otherwise keeps himself busy with soccer and other active pursuits.
Matthew "Tank" Smyth (Kanata)
Director, Matthew Smyth, not to be confused with owner Matt Barr, is affectionately known to campers as
"Tank". Tank started with Camps Canada as a Senior Counselor in the summer of 2002 and was quickly recognized
for his ability to have fun with campers and at the same time maintain order. He was soon (summer 2003) promoted to
the position of Camp Director. Today, Tank continues to prove his ability to be a fantastic
organizer, planner and leader for both campers and staff. He loves to have fun at work and brings a great attitude to
the many challenges.Tank graduated in 1998 from St. Thomas University in Fredericton, New Brunswick with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Child Psychology and Criminology. He is currently employed as a Teaching Assistant with the Ottawa Carleton District School Board. He is currently working at Ottawa Technical Learning Center in the Guidance Department where he counsels Grade 9 students in the Adaptive Learning Program.
In his spare time, Tank enjoys sporting activities of many kinds including ice hockey (goaltender), running, mountain biking, basketball, rugby, football, soccer, volleyball and track and field. He is a collector of DVDs and enjoys completing home renovations.
Tank is married to Kelly (also a school teacher) and they are proud parents of Kelsie and Caleb.
